Pregnant & plant-based?

Postby SlimJim » Mon Feb 07, 2011 10:50 pm

My wife is pregnant, and she’s been on the plant-based diet for the past 10 years, can/should she still stay on it?

I stuck with it, and all went well! I once craved an entire box of cookies, but sorry your baby doesn’t need an entire box of cookies, you know what I’m saying?

You might want to see a nutritionist about that.

My doctor is completely fine with my vegan diet while being pregnant. She gave me a quick quiz on how I get my calcium, protein, etc. and clearly I passed with flying colors. As long as you know how to eat a well balanced healthy diet and aren't eating all sweets and fried foods your baby will be just fine - in many ways better(your prone to much less pesticides in your system than meat eaters)! Of course its always good to take a prenatal vitamin regardless of being veg or meat eater.

It's a very healthy diet--there is actually a newish book about being vegan and pregnant written by Reed Mangels, a doctoral-level nutritionist who has written extensively and advised the American Dietetic Association about vegan nutritional requirements. My sis is a vegan who had a great veg pregnancy with no cravings or significant morning sickness. She was advised to take vegan DHA supplements, which she did and does (Deva brand is good, in my experience). Link to Dr. Mangels' book is here: http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Vegan- ... 687&sr=8-1

There is also a book out called "Skinny Bitch: Bun in the Oven," about eating a plant-based diet while pregnant. I haven't read that particular one, but I have read "Skinny Bitch," which is very eye-opening. So maybe that will help.
